/ˈhɒvəl/ (say 'hovuhl)

William Hilton, 1786–1875, Australian explorer, born in England; accompanied Hamilton Hume on an overland expedition to Port Phillip 1824.
William Hovell arrived in Sydney in 1813, established himself in business and took up a land grant at Narellan, NSW. He is thought to have been the first European in the Burragorang valley (1823). He mounted an expedition from Gunning, in the Goulburn district, to Port Phillip with Hamilton Hume in 1824–25; they were the first Europeans to sight and cross the Murray River and their discoveries opened up much pastoral land. Hovell later accepted greater credit for the expedition than he deserved, leading to a bitter quarrel with Hume that lasted the rest of their lives.
